It is a reversal poem that can be read from beginning to end and vice versa presenting contrasting proposition to each other. The poem intends to express the legitimacy of women in the arena of art and literature with an affirmation. Since time immemorial, women are considered unfit for art and writing under the sheer domination of patriarchal culture. The poem emphasizes a feminist strain highlighting approbation for women’s stance in writing.
CAN A WOMAN BE A GOOD WRITER?
I am not a good writer
Because I am a woman
Please teach me not the ways
‘I can become a good writer’
As at the time of death in life
I will curse my birth and writing
Nor think, I am going to make castles in air
With the belief of the presence of an artist
So, all that while I hum a song
That I am not a good writer
Even if you persuade me to believe in this man made societal
To rely that a woman can be a good writer
Only one thing echoes
I am not good enough to be admired
And I never intend to realize that
A good writer is imprisoned within me
As when I think about my imagination
I always force my conscience to muse
Can I (a woman) ever be a good writer?
(Now read from Down to Up…..)
